The public participation process for the Spanish hydrogen infrastructure network starts
Green hydrogen, a key vector for accelerating the energy transition
Green hydrogen is one of the most effective solutions to combat climate change and accelerate the transition to a more sustainable energy system. It plays a strategic role in the energy transition, both as a renewable and free-emissions carrier, and as a means to improve system flexibility and resilience, decarbonise the energy mix and enhance security of supply.
Green hydrogen is produced by electrolysis of water from renewable electrical energy, such as solar or wind power. A process that does not emit CO2 and separates the water molecule into hydrogen and oxygen. Green hydrogen makes it possible to decouple production and consumption processes and can be produced in one place and used in another when needed.
A network of hydrogen infrastructures
A solid network of hydrogen infrastructures will be essential to store and transport hydrogen in the most efficient way from the places where it is produced to those where it is consumed, in Spain and in Europe. With this objective in mind, Enagás drives the development of the first axes of the hydrogen infrastructure network, the North 1 Storage Facility and the CelZa and BarMar interconnections which form the European hydrogen corridor H2med.
European Projects of Common Interest (PCI)
The European Commission designated these four projects as Projects of Common Interest (PCI) and in January 2025 approved 100% of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) funding requested by Enagás for the study phase. A total of 75.8 million euros.

Spain, a great green hydrogen hub in the EU
These projects will lay the foundations for Spain to become the first green hydrogen hub in the European Union. Our country is inan excellent position to seize this opportunity.

Large renewable generation capacity

Privileged geographical position

Technological and industrial skills

Powerful infrastructure network and extensive experience

Part of a European hydrogen network
Spanish hydrogen infrastructures will be part of Europe’s future hydrogen network and will play an essential role in achieving the national and European objectives of decarbonisation, strategic autonomy and competitiveness.
Key to competitive industrial decarbonisation
The capillarity of the hydrogen infrastructure network will contribute to the competitive decarbonisation of the country’s industry. It will allow connecting The Iberian Peninsula’s production and consumption centres and exporting to Central Europe via the H2med corridor.

Enagás, provisional hydrogen network operator
Enagás was designated by Royal Decree-Law 8/2023 of 27 December as the provisional Hydrogen Transmission Network Operator (HTNO).
On July 30 2024, Enagás Infraestructuras de Hidrógeno was authorised by the Council of Ministers to develop the European PCIs for hydrogen networks in Spain.
